This chapter focuses on the multifaceted relationship between people and the land on which their families lived for generations. Summarizing this relationship as the place-bound relationship, this chapter examines the ways this place-bound relationship affected the meaning of home for people living in Yanxia. Vernacular place in rural China includes the system of settings where daily activities often take place outside the house. It also consists of highly socialized spaces built on social relations established through consanguineous coordinates, which in turn stabilize and sustain rural societies while strengthening attachment to place. Using this theoretical framework and drawing upon the ethnographic fieldwork, this chapter argues that the place-bound relationship in Yanxia supported the rural lifestyle, sustained social relationships and cultural performance, facilitated the construction of individual and collective identities, and imparted to local residents a sense of ownership of their home. In particular, the sense of ownership further attached the residents to the land, which, in turn, strengthened the place-bound relationship and sustained the meaning of home.

In recent years, numerous reflections have pushed on the importance of using agricultural parks to recreate reciprocal relationships between urban and rural realities, through the enhancement of their proximity. The parks can also be an opportunity to experiment with new forms of planning on a territorial scale, oriented towards the construction of unitary and coherent morphological, functional and environmental scenarios. This volume offers a reflection on these issues by sharing the results of a design experience involving the School of Territory studies of Empoli (Degree in Urban and Territory Planning) and the School of territorial engineering of Clermont Ferrand (AgroParisTech ENGREF). The scenarios arising from the reflection synthesize these two approaches, integrating the interpretation of equities with the processes of diagnostic territorial and with the construction of shared territorialities.

Landscape represents, for Massimo Quaini's research activities and publications, a recurrent and growing focus: from early 70's studies about rural landscapes of Liguria, to Hérodote/Italia, to later writings directly inquiring this concept and relating its fortune to 'modernity crisis', calling for grassroots action in order to reactivate local practices and knowledge, essential for developing landscape potentialities as a political project. This essay reflects upon publications and research experiences which contribute to define the specific legacy of Quaini as a landscape scholar, outlining a unique figure in the Italian context.

New agricultural and food models are being deployed in the territories in response to criticism of old forms and to face new challenges. They embody archetypes of the diversity observed, actor projects or even new standards. The authors here analyze situations of coexistence and confrontation of agricultural and food models according to four major dimensions of territorial development: the tension between specialization and diversification, innovation, adaptation and food transition. A series of conceptual works and case studies in France and around the world make it possible to understand the interactions between these models (confrontation, complementarity, coevolution, hybridization, etc.), beyond the characterization of their diversity and of evaluation of their relative performance. The coexistence and confrontation of these models strengthen their capacity for radical change. The book highlights the original questions of the analytical framework, its methodological challenges and the expected consequences for supporting agricultural and food development in rural and urban areas. It is intended for researchers, teachers, students and professionals interested in territorial development.
